English CombatSombo Wrestling Championships 2011
Jacket and No Jacket
New House Youth Club

Sunday September 25th 2011

With participation in sports event on a major decline there is always the need to look for a new venture. In the Combat field different styles of unregulated grappling are becoming popular. The few people who do want to enter competitions are going for the non conventional event where you do not wear jackets and clothing is very individual. Because of this Judo has suffered the most, with people in their thousands leaving Judo those remaining do not want compete and standards in our National team are suffering because of this at the recent World Championships the best GB could obtain was one 5th place, I personally believe Judo will bounce back but as a Traditional Martial Art not as competitive Jacket Wrestling sport.
That it where
CombatSombo Wrestling comes in to play we offer two types of competition with
and with out Jackets, the rules are the same in both styles. The most important
thing is that it keeps Jacket Wrestling alive and lets both styles see what the
other is doing
For the first time we had a large contingent from Alan Clarkin’s Burnley CombatSombo club who dominated the No Jacket Wrestling section. The difference between Jacket and No jacket wrestling is quite substantial and is enjoyable seeing how the different types try and cope with their new surroundings. Burnley fighters were extremely good at strangles and the guillotine, what was surprising was the amount of Judo players they caught on this.
Once the jackets went on the whole thing change again Judo and Sambo players do not realise how much they rely on the jacket! Well they do now
The rules were quite simple and very similar to Sambo, seniors could win by Submission (arm lock, leg lock, strangle choke etc standing or on the ground, you can gain points by throwing or holding you opponent. You could win by total victory this is where you threw your opponent on their back and remained standing or you gained a submission, if you gained a 12 points margin over your opponent and finally you went the distance and the person with the highest points won.
To encourage Judo players to enter I allowed strangles and choke not normally allowed in Sambo. The one thing Judo Players have complained about in their sport was that you could win outright on a hold down; this was particularly discouraging for young beginners attempting their first competition. In CombatSombo Wrestling you can hold your opponent down as many times as you liked and what you got was points.
The competition did not attract the biggest of entries but was still an action packed fullOnce the jackets went on the whole thing change again Judo and Sambo players do not realise how much they rely on the jacket! Well they do now
