Inner Leg Hook Throw (O Uchi Gari)

You learn more about this throw by reading Judo books and watching Tapes it is basic to both Judo and Sombo/Sambo. In the photo I have shown a couple of different angles to highlight the hooking action as you drive your opponent backwards. Remember continual practise is the answer.

Your Opponent is trying to kick you with a roundhouse type of kick fig 1. You move into the kick before he get its maximum power, you will have to absorb some of the kick, as you move in catch the leg, I have shown two different angles to highlight catching the leg.

Once you have caught the leg make sure you have hold of the collar because the throw is very powerful. When performing the throw make sure you hook the supporting leg vigorously, At this point you could just let go and you opponent would hit the ground with great force and this exactly what you would do if there were multiple assailants but we wish to maintain control by holding your opponents lapel you stop his head hitting the ground, While taking these photographs Miles was knocked unconscious with this throw so it can be a devastating technique so be careful.

Once we have thrown our opponent we can just walk away but I want to control him so he can be arrested so I apply a leg lock. You must make sure you have a firm grip of the foot and you then place your heel in the soft fleshy part of his inner thigh this is a very tender area. Now lean back so all your weight is on his inner thigh and you should now be squeezing and stretching his Achilles tendon

Finally if your opponent still tries to struggle lean back on the ankle and drive you knuckles up and down his shin, this very painful and you will certainly get a yell from him. Even though this technique looks very vicious once you release him, he will be able to walk, maybe not straight away and no lasting damage will have been done. remember CombatSombo has a moral dimension to its practice.
